Kapok is the traditional filling for zafus that has been used for centuries.  Having kapok fill in your meditation cushion gives it a firm and solid feel to it yet it is soft like cotton.  One way to think of kapok would be like  cotton with a lot of density making it soft yet firm.  Another thing about a kapok meditation cushion is that it will flatten when used but can be easily “fluffed” back up by pushing in on it around the edges.  Kapok will last you many, many years of heavy use.  It is also very lightweight when compared to buckwheat.  People who choose a kapok meditation cushion like it for its traditional solid feel and durability.

A meditation cushion with buckwheat hull feels a lot like a beanbag that is more solid and supportive.  It will conform to the shape of your body and has a grounded feel to it.  A buckwheat meditation cushion does not flatten like kapok and is slightly higher off the ground because of this.  It is also about twice as heavy as kapok.  People who choose buckwheat like it because of its ability to conform to your body.

Our zafu, or traditional meditation cushion, is buckwheat-filled with a cotton cover. The buckwheat is useful because it forms to fit the shape of your sitting bones. Rather than sitting right in the middle of your zafu, we recommend scooting a little toward the front edge, as this will help angle your pelvis and your knees will have an easier time finding the ground.
